A quieter Laguna Madre
Choose Port Mansfield when your idea of a coast trip is a small harbor, open water, and time outdoors. This is a Laguna Madre fishing community, not another version of South Padre Island’s beach strip. Plan around a suitable boat outing or a quiet look at the waterfront, and enjoy the change in scale.

Before the harbor was developed, the area was known as Red Fish Landing, an isolated fishing camp. The port opened in 1950 and was named for U.S. Representative Joseph J. Mansfield, associated with legislation extending the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
A channel cut through Padre Island eventually linked the harbor to the Gulf. The completed passage changed water exchange and helped support commercial and recreational fishing. That infrastructure explains why a relatively small settlement has such a strong connection to the surrounding bay and offshore waters.
