Life along the Arroyo Colorado
Rio Hondo offers a small-town view of a waterway that threads through the Valley’s history. The Arroyo Colorado gives the town its setting and its name. Pair a short visit with Harlingen or a carefully planned nature outing farther east, leaving room to appreciate the journey between the larger destinations.

Established in 1910, Rio Hondo takes its Spanish name, meaning deep river, from its location on the Arroyo Colorado. A post office followed in 1911, serving an early community of stores and local businesses.
The town incorporated in 1939. Water and transportation continued to define its setting, alongside the agricultural communities around it. The bridge is a familiar visual landmark, but historic photographs should not be treated as a guide to present road conditions. For today’s visitor, the important connection is between the town, the waterway, and the wider coastal plain.
